Highland Oaks Park

Highland Oaks Park, in northern Miami-Dade County, contains the freshwater wetland that feeds the Oleta River–the only remaining natural river in Miami-Dade County, a designated “Florida Outstanding Waterway.” This area provides the low salinity environment necessary for species important to commercial and recreational fisheries, like snook, mullet and tarpon. MUVE volunteers restored the shoreline of this freshwater wetland, planting native ferns and hardwood trees. The completed Highland Oaks Park project provides the only freshwater tributary connection to Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve that does not incorporate some form of flood control structure, substantially benefiting native flora and creating habitat for aquatic wildlife.
