The National Coral Reef Conservancy (ReeFLorida) at Frost Science provides unique opportunities for conservation, education, community outreach and collaborative research.
Florida’s Coral Reef benefits over six million residents of Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties, and the 38 million visitors to this region yearly. The reef is threatened by local activities and global factors including climate change, disease, pollution and coastal construction activities. Without conservation efforts, we risk losing this incredible natural resource.
ReeFLorida is Frost Science’s response to these threats. This initiative continues the work of our dedicated staff and partners, who are actively involved in cutting-edge coral reef restoration efforts as part of the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Restoration Hub. Our conservation work includes establishing a new coral nursery, removing non-native marine species, and caring for and studying rare corals and long-spined sea urchins in the Marine Conservation WetLab.
We communicate this work to South Florida residents, students and tourists through our Aquarium exhibits and WetLab. The heart of ReeFLorida is the Aquarium, where guests can explore exhibits featuring Florida reef species, learn about the challenges Florida’s Coral Reef faces and discover the partnerships working to restore it. The WetLab on the 5th Floor is an interactive space for visitors to engage directly with conservationists and researchers while viewing rescued corals and reef animals. We connect educators, researchers, and conservationists focused on Florida’s Coral Reef through the annual ReeFlorida Symposium.
