In the natural world, poisons are powerful weapons, made and used by many organisms in the struggle to survive and reproduce.

And as scientists probe the secrets of poison, we’re finding that these substances can also be powerful forces for healing. This summer, discover poison’s power as it seeps through the walls of the Frost Science in a toxin takeover of the museum! From our rooftop garden to the waters of our Aquarium, our newest special exhibition The Power of Poison: From the Depths of the Sea to Your Own Backyard explores poison’s role in nature, literature, and culture, while taking a deeper look at the toxic species that reside in ecosystems both in Florida and around the world.

Throughout the exhibition, you’ll walk through an immersive replica of Colombia’s Chocó Forest, where dart frogs, huge Brazilian wandering spiders and toxic caterpillars use poison to their advantage every day. You’ll also be lured into the world of fairy tales and fiction through whimsical and theatrical exhibits that explore the role poison has played in myth and culture, with a spotlight on works such as Harry Potter, Macbeth and Snow White. Then, be prepared to channel your inner Sherlock Holmes as you solve a series of poisoning mysteries using your best deductive reasoning.

Afterwards, dive deeper into the venomous and poisonous species found throughout South Florida and around the world with special spotlight exhibits on our rooftop and throughout the Aquarium. Then, stop by our Inventors in Residence Lab, where scientists are using nano-pulsed lasers to analyze samples for the presence of carcinogens and other environmental toxins.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • Immersive replica of Colombia’s Chocó Forest
  • Live poisonous species on display, including dart frogs
  • An “enchanted” book that displays magical illustrations with the touch of a hand
  • Live presentation space for interactive shows
  • iPad-powered tableaus for solving poisoning mysteries

The Power of Poison will be on view from Saturday, May 26, 2018 through Monday, September 3, 2018 inside the Hsiao Family Special Exhibition Gallery on the first floor of the museum. Admission to The Power of Poison is included in all museum admission tickets.

Did You Know?

Peculiar Plants

“Nicotine” may make you think only of tobacco, but lots of plants contain varying amounts of this toxin. For instance, green peppers, green tomatoes and even green potatoes contain nicotine, though in concentrations too low to have any effect.
